How to compress a video

  1. Choose your video

    Select an MP4, MOV, WebM, or MKV file from your device. The file name, size, duration, and dimensions appear after your browser reads its metadata. Choosing the file does not upload it.

  2. Set an approximate target size

    Enter a size smaller than the original file. The compressor uses the video duration to choose a suitable bitrate. A much smaller target saves more space, but fine detail and fast motion may look softer.

  3. Compress and save the MP4

    Your browser runs the processing engine locally and reports progress while it works. When the result is ready, compare the new size and save one clearly labeled MP4 file.

Choosing a useful target

Start with a target around half to two-thirds of the original size when you want a smaller file without pushing quality too hard. Short videos can usually reach a small target more comfortably than long videos. The displayed target is approximate because video scenes vary: a still presentation, a talking head, and a fast sports clip do not compress in the same way.

What happens on first use

The page needs a local FFmpeg processing engine before it can compress video. Those engine files download to your browser; your chosen video does not travel with them. Your browser may cache the engine for faster use next time. Processing can use substantial memory and battery, so keeping the tab open and connecting a laptop to power may help with long videos.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Your video is read and processed inside this browser. It is not uploaded to us for compression. Selecting a video only gives the current browser tab permission to read that file.

Why does the page download about 32 MB first?

Video compression needs an FFmpeg processing engine. The engine downloads to your browser before it can work; your selected video is not sent with that request. Your browser may keep the engine files for faster use next time, depending on its cache and storage settings.

Will the result match the target size exactly?

Not always. The target guides the bitrate calculation, but the finished MP4 can be slightly larger or smaller. Video complexity, audio, container overhead, and the original codec all affect the final size.

Why can compression take a long time?

Your device is decoding and encoding the entire video. Duration, resolution, motion, browser speed, available memory, and battery settings all matter. Keeping this tab active and closing other heavy tabs can help.

Which output format will I get?

The compressor creates an MP4 using H.264 video and AAC audio when audio is present. This is a practical combination for common browsers, messaging apps, presentations, and general file sharing.
